Recently, we had the pleasure of going on a picturesque cruise across this bay and witnessing the captivating allure that Crete exudes.

It was an incredible experience that truly showcased why this island is a traveler’s paradise.

Setting Sail from Agios Nikolaos

Our trip to Agios Nikolaos began with a bus ride from our hotel. I couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty around us as we navigated the picturesque streets. The bus, surprisingly large for these quaint lanes, hummed along, offering us panoramic views of charming houses, bustling cafes, and locals going about their day.

As we approached the harbour, the shimmering waters greeted us, hinting at the adventures that lay ahead. The journey, though short, was filled with sights that captured the essence of this enchanting town.

Excited travelers filled the air as we stepped onto the harbor. Our chosen vessel awaited, its deck warm from the hot sun. The crew welcomed us aboard with smiles, and we set off on our journey. The boat hummed gently as we drifted away from the harbour, promising a day of exploration and wonder in the deep blue waters of Mirabello Bay.

Kolokytha Beach: A Turquoise Paradise

As our boat approached Kolokytha Beach, we were captivated by the fascinating blend of deep blue and turquoise waters. It was as if nature had taken out its finest paintbrush and created a masterpiece just for us.

Gently, the boat dropped its anchor, settling beside some rugged rocks that formed a natural pathway to the beach. We eagerly stepped off, feeling the sun-warmed stones beneath my feet guiding us to the sandy shores.

The small beach exuded a sense of tranquillity that’s hard to find these days. The soft sound of waves lapping at the shore and the gentle rustle of the breeze created a serene backdrop.

It felt like we had discovered a hidden gem, a peaceful haven away from the hustle and bustle. I took a deep breath, soaking in the beauty and calm of Kolokytha Beach.

After an hour of bliss on the beach, we raised the anchor, setting our sights on the next adventure: Spinalonga Island.

Sailing around Spinalonga Island

Spinalonga, often called the “Island of the Living Dead,” is a small island in Crete with a history that resonates deeply with locals and tourists. Located in the natural harbour of Elounda in the Lassithi prefecture, this island, despite its modest size, carries tales of resilience, love, and survival.

Originally a Venetian stronghold, Spinalonga’s most poignant chapter began in the early 20th century when it became one of Europe’s last active leper colonies. From 1903 to 1957, those diagnosed with leprosy were exiled to this island, where they built a community against all odds.

They fell in love, got married, and even had children, all while battling the disease and societal stigma. Today, visitors can reach Spinalonga by boat from Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, or Plaka.

Skistra Bay: Snorkelling and Relaxation

As we left the intriguing shores of Spinalonga behind, our boat smoothly charted its course towards Skistra Bay, a haven renowned for its snorkelling opportunities. The moment we entered the bay, the allure of its crystal-clear waters became evident.

Two other boats floated nearby, their occupants soaking up the sun and revelling in the refreshing embrace of the Mediterranean. Eagerly, we plunged into the water, the world below teeming with vibrant marine life, making the snorkelling experience truly magical.

After our aquatic adventure, we climbed back aboard, greeted by the enticing aroma of food. With drinks in hand and delicious bites to savour, we lounged on the deck, the memories of Spinalonga fading as the wonders of Skistra Bay took centre stage in our hearts.

Heading Back with Memories

Our boat charted its course back to the familiar port of Agios Nikolaos. The journey, filled with exploration and wonder, seemed to have passed in the blink of an eye, yet the memories etched in our hearts felt timeless.

With every nautical mile we covered, reflections of the day’s adventures played in our minds – the azure waters, the hidden bays, and the laughter shared. The port, our starting point, awaited our return, not as an end but as a bookmark to this chapter of our journey.

As we neared Agios Nikolaos, a sense of gratitude washed over us. Grateful not just for the sights we’d seen but for the moments we’d lived, the stories we’d woven, and the promise of many more adventures to come.
